Galvanized plate earthing is a practical and effective method of earthing electrical systems, providing safety and protection from electrical faults, mainly used in industrial electrical installation where high fault currents are to be handled.

This method involves the use of a galvanized steel plate buried in the ground to provide a reliable path for fault currents to be safely dissipated into the ground.

Benefits

Cost effective

Easy to install

Relatively larger effective surface area in contact with the ground.

Higher current carrying capacity

Used in the soil with low moisture content and higher resistance.

Main components

Galvanized steel plate: The plate is usually made of steel and coated with a layer of zinc (galvanization) to prevent corrosion. This increases the life of the earthing system, especially in humid or corrosive environments.

Connection to the electrical system: The galvanised plate is connected to the electrical system with copper or aluminium or with a galvanised steel plate as a conductor connecting the earth plate to the earth terminal or neutral point of an electrical equipment. The connection should be secure and made using appropriate methods (like welding or bolting) to ensure low resistance and reliability.

Burial: The plate is buried in the ground to a depth that ensures that it is in contact with the moist soil, which helps to improve its conductivity. The depth and size of the plate may vary depending on local regulations and ground conditions.

Charcoal & Salt: Incorporating charcoal and salt into a galvanized plate earthing system can significantly enhance its conductivity and effectiveness.

Pipe: a GI pipe with a welded funnel for moistening is a practical solution for maintaining soil moisture around the earthing plate. By improving moisture retention and reducing soil resistivity, this method helps ensure a reliable grounding system, which is crucial for electrical safety.

Proper installation and periodic maintenance are key to maximizing the benefits of this approach.

Electrical busbars are indispensable components for the distribution of electrical power, typically manufactured from conductive materials such as copper, aluminium or bimetal (copper-clad aluminium).

Busbars are designed to facilitate the flow of large currents while minimising energy loss.
